TEHRAN(Bazaar) –Tom Phuong Le, associate professor of politics in Pomona College says: Powers like Iran, Saudi Arabia and Turkey in the Middle East in the new world order will have good maneuvering power due to the alliances and coalitions they create.
Following is the text of the interview:
Q: Some believe that the power shift in the world order has occurred from the West to the East and this situation has been stabilized. On the other hand, some believe that this new order is still in transition and has not been established. What is your assessment?
A: In my opinion, the change of power is in transition and has not yet stabilized. We are still witnessing US's dominance over many aspects of the international order. And countries like China, India, Russia, etc. now do not have the power to be equal US's power.
Q: In your opinion, the new world order will have a polar aspect. In other words, will we witness intense and conflictual polarizations in this order?
A: The new world order is moving towards multi-polarity, but the polarization will not be balanced and relations will be based more on antagonism than elements of cooperation and peace.
Q: What will be the effect of this new order on the regions? Will regional actors be able to maneuver more in this type of order?
A: According to the balance of power theory, regional powers will have a greater role and power through the system of alliances with superior poles. Therefore, powers like Iran; Saudi Arabia and Turkey will have good maneuverability in the Middle East due to the alliances and coalitions they create.
Q: It seems that the center of attention in the new world order will be the Indo-Pacific region. Do you agree with this assessment?
A: I do not agree with this analysis. It is true that China and India will be among the next powers, but there are important and critical regions that are considered a source of energy and will continue to be very important, such as the Middle East, where these countries have been trying to increase their influence in these regions during the last decade.
Q: How will the competition between America and China be in the new world order? Competitive or hostile?
A: The relationship between the United States of America and China will be heavily influenced by their technology and economic power, and will have both competitive and antagonistic aspects. As I said before, important international issues such as climate change, how to use artificial intelligence, sustainable energy, etc. will reduce the intensity of tension between them.
