Tehran(Bazaar)-Farahnaz Sepehri: Dr. Bhaskar Mondal is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at National Institute of Technology Patna and in an interview with Bazaar News Agency said: The governments need to carry out effective awareness programs through mandatory cyber literacy programs, advertisements, including cyber threats and security topics in the syllabus of all standards in the schools.
Following is the full text of the interview:
Bazaar: Which cyber threats (such as social engineering, phishing, ransomware and others) have been more common in recent years?
Mondal :phishing attacks became the most common in in the recent time followed by the ransomware.
Bazaar: Why? what is the reason?
Mondal : The biggest reason is ignorance and lack of security knowledge among the common users. Most of the Internet users are unaware of personal data privacy and possible threats of using Internet insecurely.
Bazaar: What should governments do to prevent cyber threats?
Mondal :The governments need to carry out effective awareness programs through mandatory cyber literacy programs, advertisements, including cyber threats and security topics in the syllabus of all standards in the schools. As, most of the attacks happens due to user’s lack of cyber education, the only solution is to educate them.
Government can also keep a close monitoring of non-trusted apps and websites and block them. A good government cyber security policy may also enforce the Internet service providers and distributors to filter websites based on content and rate them.
Automated systems can be developed to detect phishing websites in many cases. All trusted apps and websites can be listed by the government as a trusted directory, which can help the users to identify trusted apps and websites in minimum time. Cyber tribunals, police and rapid response teams are needed; Even they exist in many cases but most of the users are either unaware of them or avoid taking help due to legal complexity. Providing these details in printed and soft copy can be made mandatory for the sellers/ manufacturers with each connectable device.
Bazaar:How does cyber security affect the economy?
Mondal :Any kind of cyber attacks on an enterprise directly leads to lose of trust of the victim enterprise among the users and customers resulting financial loses. Attacks on government critical infrastructure like power grids, e-governance services can result huge revenue loss of the government and the related entities which we are witnessed in recent past in many countries. During the pandemic there were cyber-attacks on e-commerce websites, e-health websites over the world.
Bazaar: What are the challenges of creating infrastructure in the field of cyber security for countries?
Mondal :The biggest challenge is educating people with cyber security most importantly who are working in organizations. There are numerous devices connected to the Internet which are heterogeneous in nature, function, and configurations. Hence, a single solution for all the devices and monitoring them is near to impossible. On the other hand monitoring all the apps and websites are also very hard task but possible.
