TEHRAN(Bazaar) – Professor Frank N. von Hippel, former assistant director for national security in the White House Office of Science and Technology, says the current process in negotiations to revive the JCPOA is not appropriate and must be changed.
“Somehow this cycle must be broken before we are all blind and toothless,” Professor Frank N. von Hippel told Bazaar News Agency.
Following is the text of the Professor Frank N. von Hippel’s answer to Bazaar’s question about the IAEA Director General’s trip to Iran.
“I have read the IAEA Director General’s 28 February 2023 report to the IAEA Board on Iran’s implementation of the JCPOA.
The IAEA reports that Iran has been ramping up its rate of enrichment and accumulating product enriched to 60%.
Sixty percent is not weapon-grade but it is weapon usable.
Iran is doing this to put pressure on the P5+1 countries whose companies have been complying with the US sanctions that Iran has been suffering from.
I don’t know where this situation is heading: Will Israel and/or the US bomb Iran’s nuclear facilities? Will Iran become the 10th nuclear-armed country? Will both happen?
Obviously, despite our advances in technology, we have not progressed morally beyond the Old Testament’s mandate for retaliation: an "eye for an eye; tooth for a tooth."
Somehow this cycle must be broken before we are all blind and toothless.”
